We had a great time at our first "Libraries Love Lakes" presentation at the WHB Library last Friday. John Gross and I shared an overview of our "Adopt-a-Pond" mission, highlighting how we use Geographic Information System (ArcGIS) technology to collect pond observations and create digital maps of our data.
During the event, we led an outdoor activity where parents and children used their mobile phones to observe and record details about a selected tree. We then returned inside to display the data on a map, along with observations from around the world.
We also informed attendees that the ArcGIS software we use is available free of charge. We played a key role in securing the licenses for both Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School and the WHB School District, enabling teachers to incorporate this powerful tool into their classrooms. Feel free to contact us for more information.
Additionally, we demonstrated how we employ drones to produce high-resolution digital maps of our study areas. Several students expressed great interest in seeing the drones in action in the field.
Our second event is scheduled for this coming Friday, July 18th, at 4:00 PM. It will feature a presentation on Long Island’s groundwater aquifer system using a physical model, as well as a talk by a representative from the Suffolk County Water Authority about our local drinking water system.
